But there’s another “victim” of progress east of Memorial off I-244, Highway 11. That project to allow easier access to Tulsa International Airport did the same thing I-244 did to separate east and west neighborhoods and closed schools and businesses. In fact, there’s an entire neighborhood I call the “Island of Tulsa” because it is completely surrounded by those highways, Highway 169 and the airport.

This neighborhood should be bought out by the airport and industrial/manufacturing entities that are developing all around it because that would be a better use of the land than as residences which are now majority low-rent housing.

I invite djeffries to document the Layman-Van Acres neighborhood (which happens to have been built on Cyrus Avery’s family land), and Admiral east of Sheridan through the traffic circle at Mingo, where Cyrus Avery built a service station to capture traffic on Route 66 from Catoosa.

I encourage all who want to grow Route 66 as a tourist attraction to look east of Yale. There’s a lot of history there, just like this presented about I-244.

I went to Whittier Elementary, and one year at Kendall. It was a shame when Whittier Square went into decline, and of course the route to school obstructed by the crosstown highway I am so glad that Kendall-Whittier area is recovering a bit now. I am really glad to see the blight that was left behind being removed now so that families can come back, fix up or build new homes.
